Vocazap is a vocabulary game for teens and adults. Vocazap is made by JCOM LLC, 1309 Coffeen Avenue STE 1200, Sheridan, Wyoming 82801, United States ("we", "us"), which is the data controller for any personal data described in this policy. This policy covers the Vocazap app for iPhone and this website.
The short version: there is no account and we never ask for your name or email. The app uses a random install ID for anonymous usage statistics, crash reports and the daily edition scores, all sent to our own servers. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob; they are personalised only if you allow tracking (and, in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, give consent). Players under 13 only ever get non-personalised ads. Purchases go through Apple. We don't sell data.
What stays on your iPhone
- Progress and settings: your level, the words you have learned and missed, streaks, best scores, sound and appearance settings. They are stored in the app's private storage on the device and are not sent to us. Deleting the app deletes them.
- Birth year: during setup the app asks for your birth year. It stays on the device and is used only to choose which kind of ads you can be shown (see "Ads" below). It is never sent to us, to Google or to anyone else.
- The app never asks for your name, email, contacts, photos, microphone, camera or precise location.
The anonymous install ID
When you first open Vocazap it creates a random ID (a UUID) on the device. It is not your name, your Apple Account or the device's advertising identifier, and it is not linked to any of them. The app uses it for two things only: the usage statistics and crash reports, and the daily edition scores described below.
Usage statistics and crash reports
To see which parts of the game are used and to fix crashes and freezes, the app sends anonymous events (for example that a round or the day's edition was finished, with its score) and crash and freeze reports to our own server, telemetry.jcom.llc, run by JCOM LLC. They carry the install ID, the device model, the app and iOS version, the language and the App Store country, and never a name or an account. When a crash report arrives, the server also records the IP address it came from and the country derived from it, to find problems that affect a region; this is kept only as long as needed to fix the crash. We don't use any third-party analytics or crash-reporting service, and this data is never sold or used for advertising.
Crash and freeze reports reach us only if "Share With App Developers" is on in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements; you can turn it off there at any time. The anonymous usage events described above contain no personal data.
Today's edition scores
Every day all players get the same 10 words. When you play the day's edition and your iPhone is online, the app sends this to our server at vocazap.app:
- the day of the edition;
- the install ID, which the server immediately turns into a one-way hash (a scrambled code that cannot be turned back into the ID) and stores only in that form;
- your score (0 to 10 right answers) and the time you took;
- the country of your App Store account (a two-letter code such as GB), never your location;
- the app version.
The server uses this only to tell you the share of today's players you beat and your place in your country. Only the first scored play of each day counts. No names are sent or stored, other players never see anything about you, and the IP address is never stored with the scores (to stop abuse, the server counts requests per connection for one minute using a scrambled form of the IP address, kept apart from the scores and deleted within the hour). The scores of each day are kept for 30 days; after that only the total number of players of that day is kept. If you are offline, the app keeps the score on the device and sends it later. The share card you can send after playing shows only your score and which answers were right, and is shared only when you choose to, through the iPhone's share sheet.
Ads (free version)
The free version of Vocazap shows a short full-screen ad now and then when you leave a finished round, never during a question. Ads are served by Google AdMob (Google LLC). Vocazap Unlimited removes them.
- Personalised ads (ads chosen from your interests) are shown only if you are 13 or older (16 or older in the EEA, UK and Switzerland), you allow tracking in Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, and, in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, you agree in Google's consent form.
- Everyone else gets non-personalised ads, which are chosen from the app and the rough location, not from a profile of you. That includes anyone who taps "Ask App Not to Track", and anyone who doesn't consent in Google's form. A missing birth year is treated as under 13.
- Under 13 (from the birth year on the device): ad requests are marked as directed at a child, only non-personalised ads are shown and the app never shows the tracking prompt. 13 to 15 in the EEA, UK and Switzerland: ad requests are marked as coming from a user under the age of consent, only non-personalised ads are shown and the app never shows the tracking prompt.
To show and measure ads, Google's software in the app may collect: the device's advertising identifier, only if you allowed tracking; the IP address, from which a rough location is derived; information about the device and the operating system; how you interact with ads (views and taps); and diagnostic data about ad performance. Google uses it under its own policies: How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy. We never share your progress, your birth year or your edition scores with Google.
Changing your mind: turn tracking on or off at any time in the iPhone's Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking (or Settings > Vocazap). Where Google's consent form applies, open Vocazap's Settings and tap "Ad privacy choices" to change your consent.
Purchases
Vocazap Unlimited (a one-time purchase or a monthly subscription) is sold and billed by Apple; we never see your payment details. To know whether Unlimited is active, the app uses RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc.), which receives Apple's purchase receipt with an anonymous app user ID and basic device information, but not your name, email or payment details. See the RevenueCat privacy policy. Subscriptions are managed and cancelled in the iPhone's Settings under your Apple Account > Subscriptions.
Email. If you write to us, we keep your message to answer it. We don't add you to any list.
This website
vocazap.app sets no cookies, has no analytics and loads no third-party scripts or fonts. Like any web server, ours and our network provider (Cloudflare) handle the IP address of each request to deliver the page and to protect the site from abuse.
Children
Vocazap is made for teens and adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If a player gives a birth year under 13, the app treats every ad request as directed at a child (non-personalised ads only, no tracking prompt), and the only other things that leave the device are the anonymous usage and crash information and the anonymous edition score described above. If you believe a child has given us personal information, write to us and we will delete it.
Your choices and rights
- Allow or stop tracking in the iPhone's Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking; change ad consent in Vocazap's Settings under "Ad privacy choices".
- Remove the ads with Vocazap Unlimited.
- Delete your progress by deleting the app.
- Edition scores are stored only under a one-way hash with no name, so we cannot look them up by person; they are deleted automatically after 30 days. For any other request about data tied to your install, email us.
- Our legal basis is your consent for personalised ads, and our legitimate interest in running and improving the game for usage statistics, crash reports and edition scores. Where a law such as the GDPR (EU/UK) or the CCPA (California) gives you rights to access, correct, delete or port personal data, or to object to its processing, you can exercise them by emailing us. We do not sell or share personal data as defined by the CCPA. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
Data retention and security
Edition scores are kept for 30 days, then only the daily player totals remain. Anonymous usage and crash data is kept only as long as needed to understand and fix problems. Email is kept as long as needed to answer it. Data on the device is protected by iOS device encryption, and the app reaches our servers only over encrypted connections.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top and, for meaningful changes, mention it in the app's release notes.
